There are many “martial arts” systems that unfortunately teach techniques and tactics that will very likely get their students seriously or fatally injured. Canadian Use of Force systems maintains the following:
1) There is no reliable open-hand defense against
an edged-weapon within close-quarter range.
2) Creating space, grabbing an equalizer while looking for an escape route or higher level
force option should be your primary focus.
3) If you engage an attacker with an edged weapon everyone will get cut…
the question
is how badly and who will survive.
High-level Edged Weapon Response should be trained with highly experienced instructors and students who either possess or who are dedicated to physical attribute training which will increase their ability to respond effectively in high-stress modes. Your average student will not operate at this level.
The concept of “defense” against edged weapons is a highly sensitive issue at best that deserves a monumental amount of respect. In our opinion there is no other arena of open-hand Defensive Tactics that is more dangerous to teach.
Edged weapons are very common, highly concealable and can be cause extensive damage at almost any level or angle of contact.
Canadian Use of Force Systems offers an introductory training which demonstrates the 4 generally accepted modes of response to the threat of edged weapons and trains last resort responses in close-quarter to tie-up the attacker’s delivery system when no other options exist.
Our “Edged Weapon Considerations” program is taught in a seminar format. Where applicable students train against motivated attackers in professional FIST training suits. Please contact us for more details on how to attend a seminar in your area.
