Canadian Use of Force Systems considers a first level of physical conflict response to be entirely "self-defense" in nature.
It is at this juncture that we also educate on basic psychological and legal self-protection considerations.
In a modern context, Canadian Use of Force Systems has specifically organized self-protection physical techniques into a category of pure "Self-Protection" tactics. At the inception of Use of Force tactics the 1940's and 50's there was not as specific a delineation between self-protection techniques and compliance and control tactics designed to secure, maintain and escort any given subject. The criteria of a Self-Protection technique is its functional aim to specifically stop an aggressive attack so as to open a window of escape for the defender. In this context it is clear and ultimately very responsible to establish a category of Defensive Tactics that are simply designed to nullify an attack and to provide an escape option.
